Apple Health Facts:  The pectin in apples lowers blood pressure and glucose levels.  Apples contain boron, a nutrient that supports strong bones and a health brain.  Quercetin, also a nutrient found in apples, has shown promise for reducing the risk of lung and breast cancer and may also reduce free radical damage. Vitamin C, found in apples and many other fruits, is an immune system booster.  Apples are also a very rich source of phytonutrients (vitamins A and E, and beta carotene); compounds that fight the damage from free radicals and that are associated with reducing the risks of heart disease, diabetes, and asthma.  And, believe it or not, apples are even a natural toothbrush, cleansing the teeth of bacteria, which may reduce the risk of tooth decay. So what are you waiting for?  Go eat an apple. [Posted 7-22-2013]

Health Benefits of Coconut Oil: Coconut oil is one of the principal ingredients in many of the products Michael makes for A Little East of Eden, LLC., including Michael’s Magic Massage Oil (Original Formula and Grape Seed Oil Formula), Michael’s Spearmint & Lavender Facial Scrub, and Michael’s Restore and Renew Conditioner for Dry Hair.  Michael includes coconut oil in his formulations because of its many well-documents health benefits.

Did you know that coconut oil can moisturize skin, protect hair against damage and even function as a sunscreen? In a randomized double-blind controlled trial comparing extra virgin coconut oil with mineral oil as a moisturizer for mild to moderate xerosis (a common skin condition characterized by dry, rough, scaly, and itchy skin; associated with a defect in skin barrier function that is typically treated with moisturizers), researchers at the Philippines, Makati Medical Center’s, Department of Dermatology found that both coconut oil and mineral oil have comparable effects in improving skin hydration and increasing skin surface lipid levels. They concluded that coconut oil is as effective and safe as mineral oil when used as a moisturizer and study participants did not experience any adverse reactions during the trial.1 Coconut oil is also effective as a hair conditioner and can protect the hair from damage. Michael was inspired to create Michael’s Restore & Renew Conditioner for Dry Hair because a friend’s hair had been damaged because a hair dresser did not rinse out a hair color solution promptly enough. After using Michael’s Restore & Renew Conditioner for Dry Hair for just two weeks, Michael’s friend’s hair was restored to its original soft and silky condition.  In a study of the effect of mineral oil, sunflower oil, and coconut oil on the prevention of hair damage, researchers at the Mumbai, India, Nature Care Division’s Research and Development Department found that coconut oil prevented combing damage of various hair types. The researchers also found that there was a strong impact that coconut oil application has to hair as compared to both sunflower and mineral oil. They concluded that of the three oils, only coconut oil reduced the protein loss remarkably for both undamaged and damaged hair when used as a pre- and post-wash hair grooming product.2  Another study showed coconut oil’s effectiveness as a sunscreen – blocking about 20 percent of the sun’s ultraviolet rays.3 [Posted 8-22-2013]
